Pentecost Song: You Came Down

We climbed so high to find a name,
We built our towers in the sky,
We thought the higher that we went,
The closer we would be to light.

But higher up the air was cold,
And higher up we were alone,
Our languages turned into stones,
Our pride was all we had to hold.

Come down, Lord, won’t you come down!
We can’t climb high enough to see Your face.
Come down, Lord, won’t you come down!
We need Your Spirit in this place.

But You don’t wait for us to climb,
You don’t wait for the work of hands,
The Spirit falls like wind and fire,
And washes over dusty lands.

You came right down into the noise,
You came right down into the fear,
To break the silence we had made,
And give us back the ears to hear.

We weren’t meant to live inside ourselves,
No, we were made for something more!
Not just to be filled, but to be sent,
Beyond the limits of the door!

The Spirit takes us higher, not by lifting us away,
But by planting us together, in the glory of the day!

Come down, Lord, won’t you come down!
We can’t climb high enough to see Your face!
(He came down!)

Come down, Lord, won’t you come down!
We need Your Spirit in this place!
(He came down!)

Yes, You came down! You came down!
You reached the world with love and grace!
Hallelujah, You came down!
Moving in this holy place!
