This past Sunday at church, I told everyone that Rachel (my wife) made an old family cookie recipe that goes back several generations. That old Swedish cookie is called “Pepparkakor.” The house smelled wonderful as the first batch of cookies baked in the oven. The aroma took me back to when I was a child…
A story is told – by Fredrick Beuchner I believe – called “The Happy Hypocrite.” It is a story about a man who was born with an awful facial deformity. He grew up alone and lonely. When reaching adulthood, he decided to move from his town to begin a new life. On his way he…
If you are a member of Community Lutheran Church, you know that I am a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s church council. Our church is a part of the ELCA. I was appointed by our bishop over a year ago serve on our church’s national board. It is a great honor to…
As I write this one of our church members is dying of COVID-19. Most likely by the time you read this, they will have passed. The thought of this both saddens and exhausts me because it reminds me of the selfishness and brokenness of humanity. This is not a political issue at all. This is…

I listened intently to the Bishop’s message. I felt like I register under the “old”
that has to change. I have to say that this was the bishop’s opinion of what he thinks the future holds that the neighborhood church might not be the future or maybe it could be one of the outreach pods. I have the thought that God might have a different plan. The church as we know it today has watered down and has taken a ” on the middle of the fence position”. There are things going on that the bible does not approve of…but it goes on. I have many things to think about on this one.
I think Bishop Miller isn’t saying this is the only way the church will operate in the future. He is saying this is one model that is already working within the city.
The Bishop’s message reminds me of way back when the Jews met in small groups (pods). Are we going backward?
